Alvaro Alvarez is an established artist whose 20+ year practice centres on painting and drawing. Within his recent works of vibrant fields of colour, there is an interesting juxtaposition between the painstakingly deliberate and the 'chance happening'. Beneath the painted gouache surface of Not titled (abstract) is graphite sketching—drawn in, rubbed back and drawn in again: a process commonly seen in his work. Alvarez has worked at Arts Project since 2000 and presented his first solo exhibition in 2005. He has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, and his work is held in the National Gallery of Australia and National Gallery of Victoria collections, as well as private collections worldwide.
