By any measure Leo Cussen was a quintessential artist, having dedicated his life to creating incredibly expressive pastel artworks that revealed his love of film and popular culture. The work has an intensity which is evident in the energetic application of the medium, and in this piece, the first of four presented for auction, we see the vigour and spirit of Cussen's unique style. The figure appears captured in mid-shuffle, adorned in tuxedo and bow tie and poised elegantly, set to flow into the next move of a classic and classy dance routine. Leo Cussen exhibited widely both nationally and internationally during his lifetime, showing at Australian Galleries, Latrobe Regional Gallery, The Museum of Everything and National Gallery of Australia. His work is also held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and National Gallery of Australia.
