Different People depicts a lively scene at a glance, made mysterious on closer inspection by the curious expressions of the figures, adding layers of complexity typically seen in Coulson's work.
Michelle Coulson is an emerging artist who creates abstract drawings and paintings based on Australian landscapes, seascapes or urban scenes, whilst occasionally incorporating historic references stemming from artists such as Van Gogh and Matisse. With a skilful and light touch, Coulson creates intricate patchworks of colour and line, resulting in small-scale renderings that are picturesque and intimate. Small sections of text have started to work its way into a number of her compositions, adding new dimensions to her signature style.
Coulson has worked at Arts Project Australia since 2016. She presented her first solo exhibition as a virtual installation in 2020. She has exhibited in various group exhibitions and has work in private collections throughout Australia.
