Kanzan Denshichi (1821-1890) moved from the Koto kiln in Seto to Kyoto in 1862, and immediately opened a workshop creating fine porcelain with overglaze enamel decoration. He was one of the first ceramicists to collaborate and experiment with Austrian chemist Gottfried Wagener's new glaze and kiln technologies. In 1878 he won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. His work was commissioned by the Japanese Imperial Household Ministry for use in the Imperial residences, and can be found in the following collections: Sannomaru Shozokan (Museum of the Imperial Collections), Tokyo National Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, British Museum, Art Gallery of New South Wales, and Hamilton Art Gallery.
