Lot 88

A WILLIAM AND MARY CARVED AND SILVERED PINE STOOL
CIRCA 1690

The upholstered top in needlework raised on os-de-mouton supports joined with scrolling cross stretchers. Together with two needlework covered throw cushions.
44.5cm high, 36cm wide, 36cm deep

Estimate $800 - $1,200

Sold for $1,500

Most of the joints of the stool are loose; glue residue around the central joint and screws and screwholes to the underside of the stretchers indicate earlier attempts to secure the joints. The silvered gesso surface to the frame, which appears to be original, is heavily worn; on prominent extremities it is worn through to the pine frame; elsewhere it is chipped, scuffed, discoloured, and generally degraded. The later needlework cover to the seat is in reasonable condition, with some small splits and some wear to its gimping and fringe.

The larger cushion incorporates a fragment of 18th century tapestry, which shows some wear, as does the later needlework on the other cushion.
