Whiteley was an extremely talented printmaker who utilised a unique medium approach that combined both traditional printmaking techniques and his own inimitable vision. His works focus on the exploration of form and line, combined with an experimental use of colour and varied printing techniques. A celebration of the nude female body is one of the artists most persistent themes, capturing the form across multiple mediums, including printmaking. Lithography for the sensual line of the nude accentuates the flattening of the perspective that he so admired. The 'Towards Sculpture' 1977 series consists of eight lithographs that exhibits this beautifully and encapsulates intimate beauty and the use of loose and poetic line.
Another impression of this print is held in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
