Lot 189

A LARGE ANTIQUE SINO-MONGOLIAN HARDSTONE-MOUNTED GILT METAL CENSER
Late 19th-early 20th century

Circular with a tiered cover above the body with a broad ledge to its top above a pair of handles to the sides and standing on three feet modelled as grotesque masks, modelled in relief throughout with various symbols, animals, and decorative designs and set with various lapis lazuli, turquoise, coral, and other hardstone mounts
100cm high, 74cm wide (across the handles), 64cm deep

Estimate $1,000 - $1,500

Sold for $1,000

The uppermost part of the cover (the chimney) has been pressed downwards on one side, crushing together its double lotus mouldings and the stone-set border between these and trapping two of the pendant rings suspended around this part. Below this, in the next tier of pendant rings, three rings are lacking.

The rim of the mouth of the body has been depressed on two sides, creating uneven gaps between this and the lower edge of the cover. There are dents to both handles and the edges of the broad ledge together with scattered minor dents to other edges throughout.

There are various losses in the applied stone decoration including to one of the two large floral designs to the sides of the body, to the handles, and scattered smaller losses elsewhere.
