Lot 148
Third quarter 19th century
Each of seven lights arranged as a central light above a tier of four lights on foliate outswept branches with a further pair on pivoting branches below, all supported on an orb raised on the shoulders of a lightly-draped figure of Atlas standing on a stepped circular and square plinth, the tops of the pivoting branches variously impressed PP, D, and with groups of punch marks
Each 67cm high, 50cm wide (with lower branches fully extended), 38cm
Estimate $1,600 - $2,400
Generally in very good condition consistent with age, handling, and probable previous restoration.
There are two apparent repaired breaks or fractures towards the inner end of one of the upper branches; these appear to be stable but at close viewing an unfilled fracture remains visible to one of the breaks. Some or the removable nozzles do not fit well into the lights (although this might be addressed by rearranging the placement of the nozzles. There are some variations in the gilding, apparently a combination of natural handling wear and selective regilding.
