DOYLEY, Charles [illustrator], THE EUROPEAN IN INDIA
London, 1813

[Charles Doyley], The European in India, from a Collection of Drawings by Charles Doyley, Esq. […] with a preface and copious descriptions by Captain Thomas Williamson; Accompanied with a Brief History of Ancient and Modern India […] by F.W. Blagdon, Esq. (Edward Orme, London, 1813)

Quarto, with half title for the second work, the first complete with twenty hand-coloured aquatint plates, in contemporary brown half morocco with mottled paper boards

Estimate $1,000 - $1,500

Sold for $2,000

To the binding, the leather, which for the most part remains green on the boards, has faded to tan on the spine and is somewhat discoloured (muddled between green and tan) along the edges of the boards adjacent to the spine. The corners and the head and foot of the spine are bumped, the spine and all edges are a little scuffed and worn, and there are scattered superficial scratches and scuffs to the boards (all as visible in the catalogue photos).

The text block is generally very clean and well-preserved, with only occasional minor spots, marks, and light handling wear to the margins. The is a minor separation and cracking between signatures around the centre of the block but the block and binding remain firm. The lower right corner of the last printed page (the last page of the index) is lacking and the area adjacent to the to the loss is creased and a little dirty.

There is an old unrepaired tear to plate V, running about 11cm from its lower left side, mostly vertically outside the printed borderlines but with its last 2-3cm curving in to cross the outer printed borderlines at lower left. The plates are otherwise in good condition allowing for light handling wear around their edges.
