Lot 187
20th century
Identically modelled in Classical style, each with the head of a woman with her hair dressed with flowers and leaves on the body of a partly-draped lion couchant, on an integral low plinth
DELIVERY INFORMATION: Please note, the sphinxes are exceptionally heavy. Collection of this lot will require a sufficient number of strong carriers experienced in moving such objects.
77cm high, 41cm wide, 120cm deep
Estimate $3,000 - $5,000
One sphinx is in very good condition, with only slight bumps to some corners and edges of its plinth but otherwise little wear. The other has various losses around its plinth: a large loss to its front right corner, including part of the paw above this; a large but shallow bump to the front of the plinth; smaller losses and chips to the rear end of the plinth. This sphinx is otherwise in good condition. Both have dirt accumulated in their crevices, especially around their lower parts.
