Lot 151

A CHARLES II OAK CHEST OF DRAWERS
Circa 1680

In two parts, the moulded cornice above four long drawers each with a moulded front of two panels, on stile feet

110cm high, 115cm wide, 68cm deep

Estimate $1,200 - $1,800

Sold for $1,400

In very good condition consistent with type, age, and use.

There are narrow shrinkage gaps and variations in the levels between the boards to the top; small gaps between some mouldings and the carcase; various small losses to the lip mouldings to the edges of the drawer fronts and elsewhere; minor knocks and cracks scattered throughout; and old (long since inactive) worm holes to the pine backboards.

The brasses generally match in design but with some variations between them. All of the drawer bottoms are old replacements; most of these have shrinkage splits which have recently been secured with thin pine battens applied to their upper sides. Some drawer runners are worn, causing drawers to sit a little unevenly (but all moving smoothly).
