Lot 146

A GEORGE III MAHOGANY DRUM-TOP LIBRARY TABLE
Circa 1800

The revolving top lined with gilt-tooled yellow-brown leather above the frieze of six drawers, raised on a well-turned baluster stem on four outswept reeded feet with brass lion mask cap and casters, the drawer fronts inlaid with box wood stringing
80cm high, 106cm diameter

Estimate $2,600 - $3,400

Sold for $2,600

Generally in good previously-restored condition with replacement leather to the top and metal knobs to the drawers, both of appropriate style.

Some edges of the drawer fronts are not quite flush with the frieze; there are a few small repairs to the veneers and stringing contrasting with the adjacent wood, but not conspicuously so; and the pressed brass backplate to one knob is lacking. The casters are sagging on their pins, somewhat inhibiting the wheels in rolling freely.

The top of the pedestal extends through the centre of the table top, to allow the top to rotate freely on it. The table top should be secured to the pedestal with a peg fitted into a mortice through the top of the pedestal; that peg is lacking. (It would be readily replaced with a small piece of wood trimmed to fit.) There is a little wobbliness in the table top resting on the pedestal which would probably be remedied by securing the top as designed.
