Lot 124

The vase is signed by Baldwyn at the base of the smaller cluster of reeds.

At close inspection under natural light the vase appears to be in very good condition throughout, with the decoration well preserved and only occasional points of typical light wear to the gilding. There is some accumulated dirt and dust in the crevices.

Under UV light no areas that we interpret as disturbances associated with restoration are apparent. UV light does reveal variations in the blue glaze around the vegetation framing the group of swans, and similar smaller variations elsewhere, but us these extend beneath the decoration at some points and are not matched by any variation visible under normal light, we believe these variations are natural in the glaze rather than indicative of later disturbance.

Similarly, UV reveals a variation in the appearance of the gilding to one side of the upper part of the foot (immediately below the knop) but no variation in the gilding is visible under natural light; nor is there, under both natural and UV light, any indication of disturbance to the interior of the foot.

A reference in the catalogue description to restoration visible under UV light has been removed as this does not reflect our present interpretation of the variations referred to above.
