Lot 132

A VICTORIAN ANGLO-INDIAN CARVED HARDWOOD THREE-SEAT CONVERSATION CHAIR
Second half 19th century

Of typical form with a chalice-shaped finial to the top, the frame of the backrests and the aprons below the seats richly carved and pierced to a trailing foliage design, on three feet, each carved with an elephant mask and birds above the head of a creature, on later casters, the upholstery in leopard print velvet
115cm high, 153cm wide and deep

Estimate $1,000 - $1,500

Sold for $1,500

Structurally sound and generally in good condition consistent with age and use, with little appreciable wear. There is a large old loss to one side of the upper edge of the finial (as visible in the catalogue photos) and very occasional slight losses to the carved details scattered throughout.

The upper part of the seat (the backrest part) and the base are separate. While the upper part rests firmly in place under its own weight, it has previously been secured to the lower part with screws driven through the base of the frame dividing each of the backrests; most of these screws have since been removed, leaving open screw holes. The casters are later additions.

The upholstery is not damaged but is a little worn and dirty with a few light marks.
