Lot 219

After John STURGESS (1839–1908)
A set of four: 'Punchestown, Conyngham Cup, 1872' – 'The start', 'The double', 'The stone wall', and 'The finish'
Hand-coloured engravings with aquatint
Engraved by Edward Gilbert Hester, originally published 1874 by Thomas Cranfield, Dublin, and Arthur Ackerman, London, this set published circa 1910 by Louis Wolff, London

Each lettered in the lower margin with the title, a dedication to the Marquess of Drogheda, and details of publication

Each about 54 x 86cm (plate marks)

Estimate $800 - $1,200

Sold for $1,100

The prints are framed behind glass and have not been examined out of their frames but all appear to be in good condition, the colours well preserved and the wide margins generally clean excepting occasional unobtrusive light marks (the margins being fully visible as the prints are framed without window mounts). Minor undulations in the paper suggest the prints are not laid down but this is not certain.

The hardwood frames have some scattered knocks but are otherwise in good condition.

The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact.
