Lot 147
Attributed to Gillow & Co., Lancaster, last quarter 19th century
Rectangular, the thick rosso Verona marble slab top above the frieze with two large drawers, raised on tapering square supports, the frieze finely carved with a floral tablet to the centre and lion masks above the supports, otherwise with repeating acanthus sprays, the supports with acanthus scrolls above panels carved with foliate pendants
99cm high, 239cm wide, 66cm deep
Estimate $3,000 - $5,000
The table appears to be without a maker's mark but its vigorous eighteenth century design and high quality, with its hand-carving and use of good, finely-finished mahogany for the drawer linings, is characteristic of the later nineteenth century work of Gillow & Co. of Lancaster and not found in the work of most other makers of the period.
A serving table by Gillow & Co. (stamped) of similar period, design, quality, and size, was sold at Lyon and Turnbull, Edinburgh, in 2014 (Fine Antiques, 5 March, 2014, lot 130).
