Lot 158

TWO COLONIAL TASMANIAN MANUSCRIPT JOURNALS
Campbell Town district, Tasmania, running 1840–1844 and 1850–1856

(1) A regularly-kept private journal by an unidentified writer in the Cambell Town district, possibly related to the Davidson family, generally covering day-to-day events, mostly commercial and estate related, including occasional pages of accounts; after preliminary leaves, the entries run from the first dated 12 February, 1840, to the last dated 20 November, 1844, all in brown ink and apparently in the same hand

Large quarto, half leather over marbled paper boards, binding leaves of ledger-ruled laid paper with Britannia and 'LONDON / 1835' watermarks, 130-odd leaves, all used, double-sided except the preliminary leaves, the front board inscribed in ink 'Journal' following by a further inscription now illegibly scuffed

(2) A regularly-kept journal, predominantly of estate accounts, by an unidentified writer apparently associated with the pastoral property 'Meadow Bank' in the Campbell Town district; after the first two leaves, which are the beginning of a journal similar to that above and headed 'Meadow Bank. 9th August 1847' but abandoned after only a few weeks, the entries are records of payments made for goods and services, mostly in two columns, with each entry briefly recording the date, payee, sums paid, and the goods or services paid for, running from the first dated 9 July, 1850 to the last dated 26 July, 1856, all in brown ink and apparently in the same hand, followed later in the volume (after gaps left blank) with columns of account balances within the same period, some relating to various named individuals

Large quarto, in parchment-covered boards, binding leaves of ruled laid paper with Britannia and 'STACEY WISE / 1842' watermarks, of which 130-odd leaves (approximately three-quarters of the whole) are used, mostly double-sided, the remainder blank, the front board inscribed in ink 'Memorandum Book'

Estimate $1,500 - $2,500
