Lot 206

A RARE CHINESE AMBER GLAZED MARBLE PILLOW, TANG DYNASTY (618 - 907)
Marbling (jiao tai) was a popular decorative technique on Tang dynasty ceramics, applied to a wide range of forms including jars, cups, bowls, dishes, and censers. Marbled sections were also inlaid into larger objects, such as pillows, for decorative effect. The marbled appearance was achieved either by blending clays of different colours during formation or by applying contrasting slips to the surface. In both cases, the vessel was then covered with a transparent glaze, most commonly amber, as seen on the present lot.

A similar example sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 28 November 2018, lot 307. Similar pillow also in the collection of the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Porcelain of the Jin and Tang Dynasties, Hong Kong, 1996, p.238, no.217.
