ZHAO PUCHU 1907 - 2000
Calligraphy in running script
ink on paper
Hanging scroll, framed

The following piece, by artist Zhao Puchu (1907-2000), beautifully brings together traditional chinese calligraphy and the compassionate core of Buddhism. The characters rendered-Namo Guanshiyin Pusa-form a sacred phrase honoring Guanyin, who is believed to hear and respond to the cries of the world.
Born in Taihu, Anhui Province, Zhao was more than just a skilled calligrapher; he was a preeminent scholar, a dedicated social activist, and the long-serving President of the Buddhist Association of China. Serving as a vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, he navigated the complexities of modern Chinese politics while remaining deeply committed to the revival and protection of Buddhist culture.
In this particular work, one can examine his signature style: a balance of rounded, elegant strokes and a resilient, disciplined internal structure. It is a style that mirrors his own character-conveying a deep, unshakable serenity amidst the turbulent currents of his time. As a piece of devotional art, it remains highly regarded by collectors not merely for its aesthetic and calligraphic merit, but as a symbolic artifact representing the resilience of faith and the scholarly ideals of moral cultivation that Zhao Puchu embodied throughout his life. Similar works fetched hammer prices of HKD 713,000 at the 2013 Poly Auction Hong Kong Autumn Sales and RMB 782,000 at the 2015 China Guardian Spring Auctions.
