By descent within the Morton family to the vendors, great-granddaughters of Lt-General Boyce William Dunlop Morton (1830–1919)

See the introductory note to the preceding lot.

Juliana Hervey (née Morton, 1825–1905) was the third daughter of Colonel William Heppell Morton (1788–1829), a British military engineer in the Royal Bengal Engineers, and his wife Juliana. Colonel Morton was the only child of the first marriage of Thomas Morton (for whom see the preceding lot). In 1845 the younger Juliana married Captain Edward Hervey, an officer in the Indian Army, but the marriage was unhappy. After the death of their young daughter, Juliana separated from her husband and embarked on a two-year exploration of the northern frontier of British India, reaching China. Her journal of her travels forms the basis of her The Adventures of a Lady in Tartary, Thibet, China, & Kashmir (1853), a copy of which – apparently her own – is included with the present lot.
