Lot 156
Late 19th–early 20th century
Of break-front rectangular outline with chamfered front corners, the thick grey-veined red marble top above three frieze drawers and two full-width drawers, on outswept feet with foliate gilt bronze sabots, the wide drawer fronts and the sides inlaid with architectural and figure scenes in various woods and incised bone, otherwise inlaid with various borders and foliate designs
88cm high, 123cm wide, 56cm deep
Estimate $1,200 - $1,800
Generally very well presented, consistent with age and use, with scattered shrinkage cracks in the veneers but little appreciable wear.
The central locking mechanism for both full-width drawers is by way of a lock fitted to the lower half of the upper drawer front, the bolt of which extends downwards through the underside of that drawer front to pass through a steel loop fixed to the drawer divider and into a mortice in the upper side of the lower drawer front. At present, the bolt of the lock is extended in the locked position, but with no key present, meaning that the upper drawer cannot be fully closed (as the extended lock bolt cannot pass the steel loop).
(In preparing this report it has not been possible to inspect the back of the commode.)
