A VERY FINE TIBETAN SILVER- AND COPPER- INLAID BRONZE SEATED FIGURE OF KHASARPANA LOKESHVARA, EARLY/MID 16TH CENTURY
Elegantly cast seated in lalitasana on a double-lotus pedestal, with the right foot poised upon a separately modelled lotus blossom issuing from the base, the bodhisattva holds the stem of a lotus supporting a kundika in the lowered left hand, while the right hand is raised gracefully before the chest. Delicate lotus sprays rise along either side of the figure to frame the shoulders. The tranquil face is with a silver-inlaid urna, silver-and-copper-inlaid eyes and copper-inlaid lips, and is surmounted by an ornate multi-tiered tiara above large circular earrings. The body is lavishly ornamented with beaded jewellery, while the dhoti is exquisitely engraved with floral scrolls. Particularly notable is the rich use of silver and copper inlay throughout, enlivening the crown, jewellery, lotus stems and pedestal, and demonstrating the remarkable sophistication of the caster's art.
An inscription in Tibetan is engraved on the reverse of the base, reading:
"Om Sva Di - dran mchong dbang gi rgyal po'i sku 'di la sangs rgyas bstan pa yi ring gnas pa'i bkris shogs."
This may be translated as:
"By virtue of the recitation of the mantra ‘Om Sva Di', and through the creation of this image of the Perfectly Recollected Powerful King (here referring to the Buddha represented), may the teachings of the Enlightened One endure for an immeasurable length of time, and may auspiciousness and happiness prevail for all beings."
It's with a fitted box.
