The combination of Mt Fuji, the hawk and eggplant allude to the popular tradition that Tokugawa Ieyasu's (First Shogun and unifier of Japan) three favourite things were first, Mt Fuji; second, hawks; and third, eggplant. The trio were henceforth considered good luck when represented together. This Inro is particularly fine and the unusual shape would have been incredibly difficult to achieve, even for the acclaimed Kajikawa studio; a tour-de- force of lacquer techniques.
