Alabaster 2018 is a highlight from Samantha Everton's dynamic series Indochine, which explores the intersection of Western influences and Eastern traditions. In this piece, Everton references Elizabethan fashion; the model wears a ruff, drawing attention to the face of the wearer. Here, it has become gaudy and restrictive. The model's face is covered by thick white make up to evoke the pallid complexion which was so coveted at the time. In Alabaster, this pallor symbolises the permeation of Western fashion ideals into Asian cultures.
