Lot 189

A JAPANESE BRONZE ELEPHANT SCULPTURE*
BY TSUNEMITSU, MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912)

Modelled as a trumpeting elephant being attacked by two tigers, with one tiger underfoot at the front whilst the other attacks from behind clambering over its back, the elephant's skin naturalistically textured and tigers' patinated; signed under the front right foot; Tsunemitsu.

The bronze 41.5cm high

Estimate $2,000 - $3,000

Sold for $2,400

Generally in very good condition. The tigers retain their original spherical glass eyes except the right eye of the lower tiger which is a painted flat replacement. There is silicone residue around the base of both of the elephant's tusks; the tusks move a little when handled. The patination remains intact with the exception of slight wear at some extremities (tips of ears, etc,) and the points underside on which the group rests. There is surface dirt to the group throughout. The ebonised wood stand is lightly scratched and scuffed throughout, and its black polish is worn at its edges and at high points in its carving.
