The partially intact label on the back of the stretcher bearing the words "Illustration from Woodstock...Edward .. and Elizabeth Woodville.." provides the clue to the story of this composition; The story of King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, whom Edward secretly married in 1452 and she was crowned Queen in May 1465. At the time of their first meeting Elizabeth had been recently widowed and, as was customary for unmarried women at the time, had been dispossessed of her land and forced to move with her two children to her parents' home. Legend has it that Elizabeth became aware that Edward was visiting Wychwood forest for a hunting excursion (Woodstock referred to on the label was a wooded park - later Blenheim - within Wychwood forest that belonged to the King). Elizabeth went there to meet Edward to plead for her land to be returned to her. Edward was so taken by her beauty that he instantly fell in love.
