MOMOYAMA (1568-1600) OR EARLY EDO PERIOD (1603-1868)

The exterior of the lid decorated in sparse nashiji with flocks of flying chidori (plovers) the inside of the lid lacquered with vines of grapes and leaves in hiramaki-e hanging over a bamboo fence, the interior ita (baseboard) lacquered with sakura (plum) flowers, fitted with a suzuri (ink-grinding stone) and a copper / gilt circular suiteki (water dropper)

repairs to three of the corner of the lid and base, two cracks to the lid, lifting and old repairs to the pewter on inside of the lid, some discolouration to the outer edges from light exposure, some losses to the pewter inlaid to the insert tray, an age split to the lacquer housing for inkstone and water dropper, small chip to the base of the inkstone, break of support for inkstone housing, general wear from use to lacquer surfaces.
