Overall in good restored condition, horizontal line from previous repair across lower quarter visible under UV light and to touch, some areas of associated inpainting, some patches of inpainting predominantly to edges where there was likely frame associated paint loss, two spots of mold one larger and one smaller to central upper quarter, canvas has been relined, backing board affixed.

Pieter Gerritsz van Roestraten was a Dutch painter of still lifes, in particular he was known for floral and vanitas still lifes, however, he also painted genre scenes and portraits. After starting in Haarlem, he worked for most of his career in London where he enjoyed prestigious patronage. His paintings often highlight his ability to depict reflective surfaces of metal objects such as silverware. His work can be found in the collections of the Royal Collection Trust, London, the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh.
