American impressionist painter, Mary Townsend Mason trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, studying with William Merritt Chase and Hugh Breckenridge. In 1922 she won the Academy's Mary Smith Prize, the top award for women artists. Mason went on to exhibit widely, from Chicago to the Venice Biennale, often painting still life's and coastal scenes from her summers on Monhegan Island, Maine.
