A QUEEN ANNE SILVER CUP
Maker's mark of David Willaume, London 1706, of inverted bell shape and on spreading lobed foot, the lower body applied with cut-card strapwork, with two leaf-capped handles, the cover with applied cut-card strapwork and reeded baluster finial, engraved with a coat-of-arms below a baron's coronet and flanked with griffons and with the motto "EXCITARI NON HEBESCERE" (to be spirited, not inactive), the underside engraved with inscription "The Property of THOMAS de GREY ESQ. / OWNER OF MERTON / who died 1781".

Overall in good condition having acceptable wear, small dents and scratches consistent with age and use, good crisp marks.

A similar cup is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.


The arms are those of de Grey, Barons Walsingham. Thomas de Grey of Merton, "Long Tom", M. P. Norfolk, died in 1781 and was the older brother of Sir William de Grey, created in 1780 Baron Walsingham.
