Lot 8
Circa 1860, the clock movement signed 'Neuens Aine A Paris', the musical movements by Reymond-Nicole, the painting unsigned
The eight-day clock movement with grande and petite sonnerie and two subsidiary movements, respectively quarter-striking and single-striking, with a black and white japanned Roman numeral dial cut through a British School oil on canvas painting to appear as the clock in the tower of a Gothic church in an extensive capriccio Scottish lake landscape with monks and cattle in a fine, apparently original period frame (regilt), the clock movements housed in large box hinged to the rear of the picture frame together with the two key-driven single-cylinder musical movements, the controls for the latter accessible from the underside
134cm high, 166cm wide, 28cm deep overall (the painting 93.5 x 126cm)
Estimate $8,000 - $10,000
Overall appearance good
Frame regilt in recent years, with some cracks and losses visible, although fairly minor
Some sizable cracks visible and some associated losses to the top left edge of the box
Painting presents very well, with no apparent faults however has not been inspected under UV light
The clock movement not ticking, and not recently serviced or timed, likely will require a service
The musical movement has not been throughly tested, we have only wound one cylinder (we do not have a key for the other)- we cannnot comment on the condition of working parts.
The musical cylinders measure approximately 19.5cm x 7cm & 27cm x 7cm
Please note this condition report was taken with the picture clock hanging, and therefore we have not sighted the reverse
