The black slate top above an acanthus mounted frieze, the canted angles with bearded herm and acanthus mounts flanking the central door inlaid en premier partie in brass on brown tortoiseshell, centred with a mount of Socrates and Aspasia, beneath a baldaquin and with scrolled clasps to each corner after Andre Charles Boulle, the sides with Hercules masks, the apron with a winged female mask flanked by cornucopiae, with brass lines throughout, stamped BEFORT JEUNE.

Mathieu Befort (1813-1880) known as Young Befort, was the son of Jean-Baptiste Befort a renowned cabinet maker in Paris. Mathieu continued in his father's footsteps and received many accolades for his high quality work in the manner of the great Andre-Charles Boulle. He ultimately was awarded the patronage of Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie and supplied furniture for the royal household.
