Lot 197

A RARE AND FINE CHINESE GONGXIAN GREEN-GLAZED MOULDED RUYI-FORMED BOX AND COVER, TANG DYNASTY (618 - 907)
The box is modelled with five lobes and moulded decoration to each side. The cover is applied with a pair of confronted phoenix perched upon an elaborate looped ribbon ornament. The base is decorated with a quatrefoil floral design and three raised spur marks. Each side is enclosed within a double-line border and covered overall with an olive-green glaze. With an old fitted box.

The motif of confronted phoenixes is a recurring decorative theme on Chinese metalwork and ceramics from the Tang dynasty onwards. A related composition, with confronted phoenixes flanking a looped ribbon ornament similar to that seen on the present box, appears on a 10th-century silver box and cover from the Dr Carl Kempe Collection, sold at Sotheby's London, 14 May 2008, lot 41.
