A CHINESE TEADUST-GLAZED VASE, FANGHU, QIANLONG INCISED SIX-CHARACTER SEAL MARK AND POSSIBLY OF THE PERIOD (1736-1795)
Of faceted pear shape, the vase is moulded in low relief on the broad sides with large peach-shaped panels, and the neck, with indented corners, is set with a pair of rectangular lug handles. It is covered overall in an even olive-green glaze with fine golden speckling, extending to the base around the mark, which is reserved in brown glaze; the foot is finished with a blackish-brown wash.
Vases of this form were produced in the Qianlong period in a range of monochrome glazes. These include Ge-type, illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, Japan, 1987, no. 960; flambé examples sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 May 2013, lot 2279, and 1 June 2011, lot 3716; and a larger Ru-type vase sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 31 May 2017, lot 3203. A teadust-glazed example of comparable size (30.7 cm high) was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 1 June 2011, lot 3708, and another, from the Studio of Clear Garden collection, at Christie's New York, 22 March 2018, lot 609.
