Lot 205
The powerfully modelled camel is shown kneeling in a naturalistic posture and is covered overall in an even amber glaze. Seated between the humps is a female rider wearing an official's robe and hat, glazed in blue and green, with the right hand, face and hat left unglazed.
Camels modelled in a kneeling posture are rare, and examples accompanied by a female official rider appear to be exceptionally uncommon. No closely comparable examples have been identified to date. A related sancai-glazed camel with a foreign rider is preserved in the National Museum of China, see: National Museum of China.
The results of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. C108z31 consistent with the dating of this lot.

Under UV light examination, the camel appears to have overpainting/sprayed areas to the central section of one side of the body, the upper left hind leg, an area to the opposite side near the front hump, the mid-section of the neck, and the upper section of the face, possibly concealing underlying restorations which are difficult to fully determine. Such restoration is not uncommon for sancai-glazed wares of this period.
Both legs of the rider have been broken and restored. There is a small glaze chip to the lower edge of the robe at the reverse, together with areas of expected glaze wear to the front and reverse of the figure. Otherwise, the rider is generally in overall good condition.
