Lot 158

AN ANTIQUE LOUIS XVI-STYLE GILT BRONZE-MOUNTED MAHOGANY BUFFET IN THE MANNER OF JEAN-HENRI RIESENER
Late 19th–early 20th century

Of break-front rectangular outline, the thick rosso Sant'Agata marble top above three frieze drawers and three cupboard doors between stop-fluted columns to the front corners, on toupie feet, the drawer fronts, doors, and sides panelled, gilt bronze mounts and mouldings throughout including foliate panels to the drawers
98cm high, 216cm wide, 65cm deep

Estimate $700 - $900

Sold for $2,000

The front left corner of the top of the carcase (beneath the marble top) is depressed, the front and side of the top sloping down towards the corner, leaving a gap of about 1cm at the corner between the underside of the marble and the top of the carcase. The cause of this is unclear and it does not continue below the top, the moulding along the lower edge of the frieze, and everything below that, remaining straight.

On all three doors there is damage to the edges of the doors around the locks (evidently caused by attempts to lever open the doors when locked). All three locks are present but removed from the doors. The lock of the central door is attached in its locked position to the loop on the front of the carcase to which it engages but this is not preventing the closing of the door. No key is present for the locks. The brass key hole insert for the left-hand door is absent.

Otherwise, very well presented.

(In preparing this report it has not been possible to inspect the back of the buffet.)
