A TIBETAN SILVER INLAID GILT-BRONZE SEATED FIGURE OF TARA, 14TH/15TH CENTURY
This beautiful bronze image inlaid with semi-precious stones and silver inlay represents the goddess who is known for her gentle kindness as well as her ability to save people from the dangerous states they get themselves into. In the India of the 5th-8th century a great number of hymns were composed to Tara which were intended to be sung by people who were in great danger or situations of strife. By singing them it was believed that Tara herself would swiftly descend and restore the situation to normalcy.

In this image from the 15th century or possibly some time before that period - perhaps as early as the 14th century - we see Tara looking at the viewer with a faint smile and with her silver-inlaid eyes giving her an almost lifelike aura. The design on her garments suggest that the artisan was familiar with Indian luxury fabrics of the period and they reflect her high status. Her left hand holds a lotus which represents her absolute purity and informs the viewer about Tara's own youthful virginity. This purity is suggested here in her lack of breast development and she is most often represented as a more mature young woman. Only very rarely do we find an image of her as a young maiden, making this an image of particular rarity.

Tara holds her right hand in the gesture of generosity while her raised left hand show the gesture of protection from harmful forces. The base on which she sits is created in the style commonly found in western India as well as in the Bengal of the 10th century. This leads to the idea that this image which was created in Tibet by someone who was intimately familiar with the earlier Indian styles of representing her in images. This is a particularly charming and lively image and shows the ability of the artisan to convey several different aspects of the deity's nature at the same time. It is to be noted that there also exist a number of images of Tara where she is depicted as a fully mature woman often seated in an extremely relaxed manner and shown with a slightly generous bodily proportion.
