This image of the standing Buddha with his right hand held in the gesture of reassurance, quite possibly dates to the 12th century or slightly earlier. From its style - especially its facial features and notably the eyes made from silver-gold electrum, the image is typical of those made in the western borderlands of Tibet in this period. From its style it is possible that this piece originated in area of Swat located just north of Kashmir. The image appears to have been part of a group as its base suggests it was never intended to stand alone and that it was part of a group of similar images depicting core aspects of the Buddha's teachings through their gestures. The image holds his right hand in the gesture of reassurance. The wear evident on the image is likely to be due to centuries of respectful handling and goes to confirm its age. Of note is the delicate manner in which the Buddha holds the robe with his lowered left hand by means of what appears to be a special cord for that purpose. (Dr David Templeman, Monash University)
