The bulbous mid-section is boldly cast with a wide band depicting taotie masks, set between concentric bands encircling the flaring neck and the spreading foot.
Related bronze zun vessels of this type are held in several important museum collections. A particularly close comparison, matching the present vessel in proportions and decorative scheme, but slightly smaller in size, is illustrated by Jessica Rawson in Western Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M. Sackler Collections, vol. IIB (Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1990), pp. 548-549, no. 79, and is dated to the late Shang or early Western Zhou period. Further comparable examples include a zun in the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, published in Wenwu, 1995, no. 6, and the renowned Fuxin Zun in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Masterworks of Chinese Bronze in the National Palace Museum (Supplement) (Taipei, 1973), no. 23, p. 103. Another related zun decorated with taotie masks framed by concentric bands is illustrated by Rawson, op. cit., vol. IIB, pp. 554-555, while a similarly flared example is published in The Freer Chinese Bronzes, vol. I Catalogue (Washington, D.C., 1967), pp. 78-82.
A similar Zun sold at Christie's New York, 10/11/2015, lot 21; also see another comparable example sold Sotheby's New York, 22/3/2022, lot 103.
