JAMES MARKWICK, LONDON, CIRCA 1690
The ebonised case with pierced gilt metal basket top centred by a cast brass carrying handle. Stylized finials to the four top corners of the case. Glazed side panels raised on a moulded base and ebony block feet. The square brass dial plate with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring and blue steel hands. The matted centre with ringed winding holes and engraved decoration to the calendar aperture. The chapter ring flanked by cherub head spandrels. The twin fusee, eight day going and bell striking movement with verge escapement. Small bob pendulum. Pull repeat on three bells can be manually operated by push bar. The rectangular backplate profusely engraved with foliate scrolls around central reserve bearing the signature Jacobus Markwick - Londini

James Markwick was free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1666 and is known to have worked at the Royal Exchange until circa 1705. His son, also named James was free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1692 and was appointed Master in 1720.
