Lot 127
CIRCA 2ND-4TH CENTURY A.D.
A section of a sarcophagus panel, depicting two figures both wearing short tunics, the drapery of which is naturalistically carved to emphasize their movement, particularly in the case of the figure on the right who appears to be lunging to his left, both figures with short, drilled hair.
The gestures and position of the figures suggest that this is possibly a scene portraying a mythological battle, often a trope of sarcophagus decoration. Mounted onto a custom made rouge marble plinth.
32.7cm high. 19.9cm wide excluding base.
Estimate $8,000 - $12,000
The ancient break running horizontally across the upper portion of the panel has been glued, all other chips and losses to the panel range from ancient to more recent. There are numerous deposits of ancient foreign material to the surface which is consistent with age. There is a small black line to left side of the panel which appears to be from a permanent marker. The rouge marble base has some very minor chips to the edges.
