HMV (also known at His Master's Voice) takes appropriation from the logo of the British brand icon of music and entertainment company founded in the 1920s. The company logo portrays a dog, listening intently to a cylinder phonograph.
Like to original logo, Banksy's take depicts a seated dog in profile, facing a gramophone. However, with Banksy's usual irony he reinvents the image, ironically places a bazooka on the dog's shoulder, holding it directly to the gramophone.
This leads to different interpretations. One that Banksy is illuding to the tension and differences between todays aging masses and the young. The artist has provided album artwork for bands over the years, and he may be commenting on the losing battle of music retailers in the digital era.
