Lot 31

A VERY FINE AND RARE CHINESE OFFICIAL WARE FAMILLE-ROSE "SCHOLARS" VASE, HUAI REN TANG ZHI FOUR-CHARACTER IRON RED SEAL MARK, HONGXIAN PERIOD (1915 - 1916)
The vase is finely decorated with six scholars reading a scroll under pine trees.

Porcelain bearing the Huairentang mark was primarily produced during the Republican period (1912–1949). The most representative group belongs to the so-called "Hongxian ware," commissioned under the supervision of Guo Baochang during the brief reign of Yuan Shikai (1915–1916). This series, together with wares bearing the "Jurentang" and "Jingyuantang" marks, forms part of the finest official porcelains of the Republican era. Characterised by its finely potted bodies, pure and delicate glazes, and exquisitely executed enamel decoration, the group is particularly prized due to its extremely short production period—lasting only a few months—and its limited output of approximately 6,000 pieces, making it one of the most important and sought-after categories of Republican porcelain. A smaller vase (28.2cm high) with Jurentang mark, see Sotheby's London, 5 November 2025, lot 46.
