JAMES MARKWICK, LONDON, CIRCA 1705
The ebonised case with repousse work to gilt metal double bracket top. The corners mounted with gilded brass urn finials. Cast handles to the sides, above glazed panels. The front door applied with further gilt mounts to all four faces. The moulded base raised on block feet. The square dial with winged cherub spandrels and blue steel hands to silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring. Calendar aperture and ringed winding holes, the former with engraved border decoration. Eight-day movement with twin fusees, ringed pillars, bob pendulum and verge escapement. Hour striking on bell and pull repeat on six bells. Rectangular brass plate engraved with foliate designs around a central cartouche with Markwick-Londini engraved within.

Case worn, all original. Felt basket replaced. working, not recently serviced or timed. stress cracks to case in places consistent with age and use. Feet replaced.

James Markwick was free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1666 and is known to have worked at the Royal Exchange until circa 1705. His son, also named James was free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1692 and appointed Master in 1720.
