Lot 18
Circa 1900
The coin-operated and crank-wound double-comb disc music box on reeded cast gilt bedplate, within a decorated walnut case, the hinged door with box-frame mirror-back compartment with 'Monkey dancers' automaton, the music box mounted on a later polished wood plinth box base with a polychrome painted full length figure of a young Savoyard organ grinder, holding a crank, together with a travelling case containing sixteen 40cm discs
150cm high, 70cm wide, 92.5cm deep (overall), the disc travelling case 41.5cm high, 24cm wide, 44cm deep
Estimate $3,000 - $4,000
The music box appears to be working but we have not thoroughly tested its operation nor fitted the spare disc, and cannot comment on the condition of working parts
The monkey dancers are moving but appear to require some maintenance.
The case of the polyphon and the discs have been restored and repolished and remain well presented. The decoration to the front of the polyphon which is rather naive in execution, might be original but this is uncertain; it is also unclear whether this has been added to or restored
Plinth base is likely to have been added at the same time as the painted and wood carved figure, likely in the second half of the 20th century
The mirror back and dancers showing signs of aging and wear
