Regency TR-1 - The World's First Commercially Produced Transistor Radio
American, circa 1954, serial no. 23199, battery operated, powered by a 9 volt battery, black rectangular plastic front with inset speaker grille, circular gold coloured metal tuning dial, and stamped 'Regency' and crown logo, removable clear plastic back, in light brown leather case

OTHER NOTES
The TR-1 was manufactured by Industrial Development Engineering Associates (IDEA), Indianapolis. In July 1954 IDEA had been approached by Texas Instruments (TI) to mass produce a pocket sized radio using their newly developed geranium transistors. These miniature solid-state amplifiers required far less power than the bulky valves used in radios up to this point. Chicago industrial design company Painter, Teague & Petertil were employed to design the case. The first TR-1s were produced in time for 1954 Christmas market and, ultimately more than 100,000 were manufactured.
