Dr Julian Smith was an eminent Melbourne surgeon and amateur photographer of wide repute remembered by the portfolio of portraits, Fifty Masterpieces of Photography. He made an important contribution to medical instruments, inventing blood transfusion equipment adopted worldwide during the 1940s.
W.B. McInnes had great success as a portrait painter, winning the Archibald seven times. This work was the first of two portraits of Dr Julian Smith which W.B. McInnes entered into the Archibald Prize. The second portrait won the award in 1937.
