Charles Freudenberg was born in Germany in 1833. He joined Co. 'A' of 52nd New York Regt. (German Rangers) as a Captain on 3 August 1861. He was later promoted to Major and then Lt. Col. on 24 November 1862. Freudenberg was injured on 2 July 1863 whilst leading his regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg. He resigned because of disability on 10 December 1863 and later became a Major and Lt. Col. in the Veteran Reserve Corps. He was mustered out on 9 March 1866 and joined 45th N.J.? Regt.
