OTHER NOTES
Samuel J. Oakes, merchant, was born in 1833 in Old Town. He left a wife and child to join Co. 'I' 18th Maine Infantry as a private soldier on 30 July, 1862. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on 23 August, 1862. His regt. was renamed the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery in January, 1863 and served in the defence of Washington until May, 1864. General Grant then ordered all heavy artillery units to Petersburg, VA. At the Petersburg Assault on 18 June, 1864 the regiment lost 635 men killed or wounded in 10 minutes; the greatest loss of any regiment during the Civil war. Oakes was killed by a Confederate sharpshooter on 25 March, 1865 near Petersburg.
