OTHER NOTES
Charles Graves was born in Michigan in 1840. He joined Co. 'C' 19th N.Y. Inf. on 22 May, 1861 as 1st Sgt. His designation changed to 3rd N.Y. Light Artillery in December, 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lt. on 24 January, 1862 and then resigned on 27 April, 1863 to accept a commission as Capt. of the 1st Nth. Carolina Coloured Troops, a black regiment with white officers. Graves was promoted to Major on 24 September, 1863 and fought at the Battle of Olustee, Florida, on 20 February, 1864. He was captured at Currituck Bridge, FL. on 9 September, 1864 and paroled on 17 October, 1864. Due to severe bronchitis he was discharged on 27 February, 1865.
After the war he married in 1870 and was father to 2 daughters and 1 son. He died from Emphysema in 1885, aged 45 years.
